At least 1.3 billion people worldwide lack access to the most basic healthcare, often because there are no health workers to take care of them. "The global population is growing, but the number of health workers is stagnating or even falling in many of the places where they are needed most," said Lee Jong-wook, Director General of the World Health Organization, in April 2006. The World Health Report recommends that in order to achieve this goal, we need "the right workers with the right skills in the right place doing the right things." Owing to this reason, the need for global healthcare has skyrocketed in recent years. Several national healthcare organizations chose not to undertake such an expensive project due to resource constraints; hence, the opportunity to unite healthcare volunteers globally remained a distant dream. It was clear that an independent, third-party, non-partisan, non-governmental organization (NGO) unaffiliated with any country or entity needed to be formed to promote healthcare volunteering and work in a rapidly globalizing world.
To realize this dream, HealthCare Volunteer was founded on January 1, 2006 by an American medical student and an American dental student, who realized the need for a free 501 (c) (3) non-profit portal that connects all volunteers and job seekers interested in health-related volunteering or health-related work to appropriate opportunities. HealthCare Volunteer was accessed by thousands of volunteers and job seekers from more than 118 countries in 2006. In 2007, DentalVolunteer merged with HealthCare Volunteer to create the world's largest listing of health-related volunteering opportunities.
HealthCare Volunteer is currently a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization in the United States and will subsequently assume a NGO status internationally and politically enabling itself to partner with health organizations anywhere in the world.
Our mission is to empower any individual to make an impact in community and global health. We connect volunteers to health-related volunteering opportunities for free—anywhere, any time, and for any length of time. We aim to become the de-facto non-profit organization and website for health-related volunteers and workers anywhere in the world.
We are building the world's largest listing of healthcare volunteering and employment opportunities. We empower every human being to contribute to the health of the world.
We employ innovative technology solutions to improve the healthcare system. Unlike many of the services on the Internet, our services are 100% free for volunteers and organizations alike.
We provide an avenue for any volunteers interested in health areas to find an appropriate volunteering opportunity that fits their requirements.
We are demonstrating to the world that there is no shortage of health-related volunteers and workers or opportunities.
Based on the research we conduct through our free online services, we ultimately hope to sponsor and foster all types of new volunteering opportunities in areas that we designate as healthcare shortage areas.
