Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
Amazon Promise is a U.S.-based, non-profit organization founded to provide desperately needed medical care to remote populations living in the Upper Amazon Basin of Northeastern Peru. Our Peruvian operations are headquartered in the jungle city of Iquitos. We provide medical services and education to residents of Iquitos and neighboring Belen. Additionally, since 1994 we have conducted routine, volunteer-based medical outreach, local training and education in 32 remote jungle villages through our official Peruvian affiliate, Proyecto de Expediciones Medicales (Medical Expeditions Project) (PEM). Six times a year we conduct expeditions into the outlying jungle villages, bringing teams of medical and non-medical volunteers into villages that have requested our assistance through the Ministry of Health. We staff our expeditions with 4-10 paying international volunteers including physicians, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, dentists, pharmacists, EMT/paramedics, and medical students. Non-medical volunteers assist with setting up the clinics, registering patients, keeping patient records, monitoring supplies, collecting information on local health practices, and other support tasks. Amazon Promise teams teach by example safe waste removal, water supply management, nutrition, hygiene, and basic medical and dental care practices. In return, our teams learn local traditions of healing and the use of indigenous medicinal plants, while maintaining a sensitive and respectful support for local social systems and cultural beliefs. This is a true cultural exchange: volunteers gain invaluable knowledge of local culture, and by helping to reinforce the efficacy of traditional healing practices rather than trying to replace them entirely with Western medicines, we encourage the preservation of traditions that might otherwise be lost.
