Carolyn Candido, M.D. candidate (Email)
President Carolyn Candido is a second year medical student at University of California, Davis. She has a BS in Computer Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and an MS in Biomedical engineering from Purdue University. She has over 8 years of experience in biomedical engineering, public health, and volunteer work. In 2002, her team won 2nd place in the Society of Women Engineers Team Tech competition, in which they designed a foot interface for the Intuitive Surgical Da Vinci machine. For her Masters Thesis, she designed a Musical Medical Monitor that converts the ECG INSERT INTO sound to enable detection of arrhythmias in surgery and the ICU, patent currently pending. After she obtained her Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering she worked as an electronic medical record consultant for Cerner Corporation. She has conducted public health research at LA Free Clinic, she studied the effects of depression and patient provider communication on Latino diabetic patients. She was an AmeriCorps volunteer in the HealthCorps program, mapping underserved populations and physicians in Los Angeles County for Health Provider Shortage Designation. She recently organized a medical mission to Haiti that donated 100 lbs of medications, served over 1000 patients, and trained 20 healthcare providers in CPR and ultrasound. As a second year medical student, she spends her weekends volunteering at Bayanihan Free Clinic, providing primary care to uninsured and undocumented residents of Sacramento County. |

President Emeritus Neil Patel is President and Founder of HealthCare Volunteer. Mr. Patel has almost 8 years of experience in managing charitable organizations and over 10 years of experience in the medical device, public health and hi-tech. industry. At age 17, he founded StudentsHelp.org Consulting, the world's largest student-run volunteer computer consulting organization, which ultimately served thousands of people and non-profits worldwide. From 2002 - 2004, Mr. Patel worked in regulatory affairs at Medtronic Inc. and as a submission reviewer at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Devices and Radiological Health - Cardiac Pacing, Defibrillators and Leads Branch. From 1997 - 2002, Mr. Patel worked at over a dozen technology companies such as Netscape (acquired by AOL Time Warner) and OnePage (acquired by Sybase). He currently has one medical device patent pending with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Mr. Patel has received half a dozen awards including volunteering awards from the City of Palo Alto, International Youth Foundation and the Institute of Electrical Engineers, and has completed thousands of hours of volunteer service. In 2008, Patel was awarded the UCLA CEY Humanitarian Award. Mr. Patel has lived in Tokyo, London and all over the United States, and has visited well over 25% of the world's countries. He has been featured in over 15 print publications, including Financial Times, New York Times and The Columbus Dispatch. He has spoken on non-profit topics on CNN, New Media News and numerous other international T.V. stations across the world. Mr. Patel received his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering / Computer Science and his Minor in Entrepreneurship and Management from the Johns Hopkins University, and has completed coursework in public health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the UCLA School of Dentistry and a Certificate in Global Health from the UCLA School of Public Health. Most recently, Mr. Raghavan spent 3 years at SAP where he worked with clients of all industries to develop business cases for SAP software, led the Business Transformation Raghavan is currently pursuing a Masters in Biotechnology at the University of Pennsylvania where he is the Deputy Vice Chair for International Affairs in the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly. Mr. Raghavan graduated from MIT in 2004 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science and a B.S. in Management Science from the Sloan School of Management. Mr. Shafique possesses a diverse operations background within for-profit and non-profit organization, focusing on the use of technology to reach strategic business objectives. Mr. Shafique is managing healthcare volunteering operations, fundraising, and organizing volunteering projects in the Middle East and the surrounding regions of Africa and Asia for the poor people and patients who cannot afford their treatment. In addition, he is managing HealthCare Volunteer’s web portal and IT systems, which is central to the non-profit’s operations. Vice President- Tanzania Erick Mlanga is Vice President - Africa of HealthCare Volunteer. Erick has almost 5 years of experience in public health capacities in Eastern Africa. He has worked in the field at the Sumbawanga Regional Hospital- Ministry of Health to help boost Environmental health services in the Region- Vaccination, occupational and community health, water and sanitation, solid waste management, Risk and Impact assessment, Health education to the community and the Secondary schools and inspection of food and food premises. In April 2004, he worked as a researcher with the Ministry of Health, appraising solid waste collection in Ilala District following the involving of the private companies. From 2003-2004, Erick was President of TEHSA (Tanzania Environmental Health Association). He sat on the Board of Directors of the Finnish NGO, SIEP (Social Integrated Education Program) in 2002-3, which distributed text books and resource materials to secondary schools. Dr. Kenneth Oyakhire, BDS
Vice President - Nigeria Dr. Kenneth Oyakhire is currently the country director of healthcare volunteer in Nigeria. He has over 6 years experience in the field of public health and community development. Dr Kenneth Oyakhire has served at various community levels assisting small and poor communities in the areas of health promotion and community development. In medical school, he was a strong member of the committee on dental education and health (CODEH); a faculty initiated oral health promotion program and he served at various capacities in promoting oral health in Nigeria. Because of his passion for public health, while working at the USMANU DANFODIYO UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL in Sokoto State, Northwest of Nigeria, he volunteered to assist in carrying out quality health care services to the poor, through house to house visitations, diagnosing simple medical conditions, prompt referral of complicated medical cases and surgical emergencies to major health facility, drug distribution, carrying out immunization programs through local government support, organizing various focus group discussion for different age groups to find out their health needs and finding interventions for them. He was involved in several school health programs in collaboration with multinational companies like UNILEVER through its HEALTHY LIVING AND BETTER FEEDING Program in Gombe state, Northeast Nigeria in 2004 and as team head to Enugu state, Southeast Nigeria in 2005 and in affiliation with the CALENS DENTAL CLINIC Wuse 2 Abuja, volunteered as the coordinator of health promotion program at the Loyola Jesuit college in Karu, Federal capital city Abuja in 2008. In 2006, he was also part of the oral health team (volunteering) in collaboration with FEDERATION OF INTERNATIONAL DENTIST on various oral health promotions in Lagos suburbs like Ibeju lekki and Epe. Vice President - Latin America Mr. Paredes is Vice President - Latin America. Alfredo Paredes was born in Mexico and migrated to The United States with his family at the age of 18 years and is a fluent Spanish speaker. He has volunteered in local health fairs in Southern California and participated in dental volunteering in Tecate, Mexico. Mr. Paredes has extensive volunteer experience in the medical and dental field. Most importantly, Mr. Paredes is dedicated to improving equal access to Oral/Medical Health Care for underrepresented individuals in The United States of America and Latin America. He continuously visits middle schools in Los Angeles County to give motivational speeches to kids to pursue college education. Mr. Paredes has worked tutoring Math and Science for several academic organizations, such as Bruin Corps at UCLA. His name also appears as a co-author in the scientific magazine Blackwell Pub due to his research at the UCLA Cardiovascular Department on the Sodium Calcium Exchange and the Plasma Membrane Ca2+-ATPase in Heart cell function. Dr. Tara Athan, Ph.D.
GIS Software Services / GISCorps Tara Athan, Ph.D., is a volunteer with HealthCare Volunteer focused on displaying interactive maps of global health volunteering opportunities on the HCV website. She is Principal of Alternatives to Invasive Species, an environmental consulting firm based in Mendocino County, California. Her previous professional experience includes faculty positions at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the University of Colorado. She was also on the staff of Pacific Northwest National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratories, where she worked on nuclear waste safety and environmental restoration projects. Ms. Athan received her Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Caltech in 1986 and is currently broadening her capabilities as a Master's student in GIS with the University of Leeds |
Alex Joshi
Director - Creative Media Alex Joshi is Director of Creative Media at HealthCare Volunteer. Prior to Health Care Volunteer, he produced Bad Jakalz: Idiosyncratic Overload music CD, featured in the 1999 Bay Area Student Multimedia Exposition. While in college, he spent 4 years singing in the Glee Club, participated in several student films, and lent voiceover talent and technical assistance to other student projects. He became interested in user interface design shortly after graduation from college. After a brief stint working at Electronic Arts as a beta tester and design evaluator, Mr. Joshi took courses in UNIX and C++ at Foothill College before pursuing his master's in Library and Information Science at San Jose State University, where he is currently enrolled. The bulk of Alex's knowledge of HTML, CSS, Dreamweaver and Flash was self-taught on the job while doing summer internships at Google in 2005 and 2006. He attended Occidental College in Los Angeles, originally intending to study physics, but ultimately got his B.A. in Philosophy with a minor in English and Comparative Literary Studies. |

Director / Assistant Professor UCLA David Geffen School of MedicineDr. Ravi Goklaney joined the Board of Directors in December, 2005. He is a Distinguished Fellow of American Psychiatric Association with over 20 years of Clinical and Research experience in Community Mental Health, Private Practice and Academic University settings. Currently a Assistant Clinical Professor at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Goklaney serves as the Assembly Representative to the American Psychiatry Association and is the past-president of the Central California Psychiatry Society. Among his numerous Awards is the Captane Thompson Psychiatrist of the Year Award in Central California and distinguished recognition from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, a volunteer organization to advocate for services for those suffering from brain disorders.
