VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION:
American Cancer Society Resource Center Volunteer
POSITION SUMMARY:
Volunteers trained by the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the hospital will welcome visitors, provide a warm and compassionate presence, and support and assist patients, their families and members of the community in their search for information on specific topics. Volunteers shall not give medical advice. All medical questions should be referred to the individual??s healthcare provider.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
?? Willingness to interact with visitors to the Resource Center and be sensitive of their wishes. Must be comfortable with patients, flexible, sensitive to the needs of patients, and a good listener. Must have good interpersonal skills and ability to relate to patients and staff on all levels.
?? Assist visitors with using the ACS and other databases, websites, the Cancer Survivor Network and ACS tool free 800 number (1-800- ACS2345)
?? Maintain patient/visitor confidentiality at all times
?? Maintain visitor log and reports on center activity
?? Maintain supply of ACS approved materials, reordering through the Resource Center Coordinator when necessary
?? Maintain supply of approved pamphlets on various topics
?? Attend all required trainings and meetings
?? Interact with hospital personnel for patient outreach opportunities
?? Establish and maintain a lending library system
?? Produce printouts and handouts as appropriate; promoting various special clinical events in the Resource Room
?? Register participants into programs or screenings held in the Resource Room
TIME COMMITMENT:
A minimum of 3 hours, one day a week.
QUALIFICATIONS:
?? Understanding and compassion for those facing cancer or other health crisis
?? Proven telephone etiquette
?? Knowledge of basic computer skills or willingness to learn
?? Committed to scheduled hours
?? Works independently but takes direction easily
?? Willingness to give at least 2 weeks notice if unable to continue volunteering if at all possible
