Community Education needed in
Jinja Uganda
Job Description:
About the Organization:
AASU is a registered CBO (community-based organisation) in 2 districts of Uganda and has been going from strength to strength since 2010. We believe in sustainable community development through the provision of quality education for all – male or female, young or old, able-bodied or otherwise.
About the Project:
Our Community Education programme is one of our 4 main projects and at the heart of the organisation. The project is based in Kibuye, a village in North Eastern Kamuli district and targets men and women in the community who have little or no education. Interns will specialise in one topic, which they will be responsible for planning and leading and teaching. Topics include: HIV/AIDS and other STD awareness (e.g. syphilis), family planning and reproductive health, hygiene and sanitation, nutrition, and English literacy and math classes. However there is a lot of scope for volunteers to direct their work to suit their own interests. As community members are usually farming in the morning hours, classes will take place in the afternoons while preparation and mobilisation will happen during the morning.
About the Position:
Arise and Shine Uganda is seeking self-motivated, organized and pro-active individual to work on our community education projects. We are seeking an intern who, working alongside AASU staff, will help plan and teach classes to adult community members in Kibuye village, Uganda. The current classes focus on: English literacy and math, nutrition and family planning/ reproductive health and HIV/AIDS awareness for both male and females. We are looking for an individual with a passion for sustainable community development and an interest in quality education.
Kibuye has an estimated population of 60,000 people and is spread over 35km on the shores of Lake Kyoga on the Victoria Nile. As Kibuye is a rural, remote village it doesn't have electricity or running water, although there is safe drinking water from AASU’s bore hole and we have clean, safe accommodation for all volunteers. You will stay in thatched huts within a secure compound with teachers and other AASU staff. In Kibuye you will see the real Uganda!
Interns on this project will stay in Kibuye Monday-Thursday and then return to Jinja town from Thursday evening-Sunday, and will not be expected to work over weekends. This way interns will experience both city and village life, and we also encourage interns to spend some time travelling throughout other parts of Uganda while they are with us, in order to see as much of our beautiful country as possible.
Internship Responsibilities:
• Teaching adult community members about a range of topics and through a variety of means – you will sometimes be challenging long-held ideas, especially in the case of HIV/AIDS awareness and other sexually transmitted diseases, and so you need to be prepared to use a range of teaching methods to get your message across!
• Preparing teaching materials, lesson plans and possibly setting and marking homework
• Mobilizing the community members and encouraging them to attend the sessions
• Identifying gaps in our existing Community Education programme and suggesting and contributing to the design of new Education projects
• Leading training sessions for teachers in Kibuye and at the Children’s Care Home (if the volunteer has relevant teaching experience)
• Contributing to AASU’s internal learning by maintaining activity logs and attendance lists, as well as completing weekly reports and a final evaluation at the end of the project
• Expanding our community education project to other communities and villages
Desired Skills:
• Takes initiative
• Open-minded and flexible
• Organized
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Pro-active and independent
• Ability to live in rural conditions with no electricity or running water
• Ability to work in a multi-cultural, diverse environment
• English proficiency
Desired Experience
• Preference will be given to those with a bachelor Degree or seeking a bachelor degree in a relevant field such as: education, international affairs, international development, economics, public health, or community development
• Preference will be given to those with experience working in community development
Job Duration:
3 to 6 months
