Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
Bridges to Community, Inc. is a non-profit, community development organization which takes groups of volunteers to developing countries to work, learn and reflect. Through the process of living and working with local communities on construction, health and environmental projects, Bridges promotes cross-cultural learning, a deepening awareness of our global interdependence, and a commitment to the common good. Bridges began with a series of trips to Nicaragua in the early months of 1992. Nicaragua was the selected destination for several reasons. First, it stands as the second poorest country in the western hemisphere. Second, it is a country that has suffered greatly because of outside political and economic interference. Our intent was to be a different kind of presence ? offering our friendship and sharing our resources, whatever those resources might be. Since our incorporation as a 501(c)(3) in 1993, over 1500 people have participated in some 70+ trips to Nicaragua, El Salvador,Kenya, and most recently to Nepal. Frequently, our trips are filled by church groups, university or college teams (on a Winter or Spring break), healthcare professionals, or even a corporate group looking for a ?team building exercise.? In addition, we offer 2-4 trips each year for the general public. The complexion of these trips is generally quite diverse ? including students, teachers, doctors, nurses, social workers, business people, clergy, and more. Without question, there is a place for just about anyone regardless of construction experience or language ability. |
