Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
CHAMPs, or the Casa Heiwa and Angelina Mentorship Project, is an organization whose interests lie in not only tutoring the youth living in the Casa Heiwa and Angelina housing complexes in the Little Tokyo area of downtown, but in mentoring the students as well. CHAMPs purpose is constantly evolving our program is expanding from its roots as a tutoring organization to encouraging our youths self-confidence in social as well as academic settings. Our mission is to provide academic and social support for each child, both at site and within their communities. This can be accomplished through CHAMPs two-hour site visits every Saturday; we hope to develop sites to take place at both Angelina and Casa Heiwa during the upcoming year. At a typical site, mentors and youths are separated into rooms by grade level. This year, we will add a new room for the seventh and eighth graders in order to better accommodate their particular needs. During the first hour of each site, mentors work with the children on a certain academic subject; due to the implementation of a new literacy program this year, CHAMPs will set each sites focus on one subject such as math or writing. The second half of site involves a creative project or educational craft that allows mentors and mentees time to bond; these activities will correspond to the academic theme for that quarter. In hopes of increasing the success of the CHAMPs Teens Program, we will continue to provide academically, socially, and culturally relevant programming, such as by conducting workshops on drug use and domestic violence as well as having cultural theme days where mentees can enjoy food and games from various cultures, to meet the needs of our teenagers. We want to inspire our mentees to realize that there are many opportunities available to them never deemed possible. The CHAMPs community is expanding at a rapid rate. With over 50 mentees and 40 tutors, our program touches many people in many ways. One of the most important goals for the upcoming year is to expand that network. This year, we want to build strong, lasting relationships not only with mentees, but with parents, organizations such as the Little Tokyo Service Center that sponsor activities in our site areas, the community itself, and finally, with other UCLA organizations. Within CHAMPs, strong service-oriented foundations exist as we already participate in activities outside of site visits. We keep the parents in-the-loop by providing a quarterly newsletter in both English and Spanish. Our sites will be infused with culture through collaborations with UCLA ethnic and cultural organizations, such as the Nikkei Student Union (NSU) and the African Education Project, who can perform or otherwise present a culturally relevant idea at site; we also intend to collaborate with other tutoring projects to share ideas and resources. Through these partnerships as well as others, we will be able to guide our mentees even better than before.
