Clinical Care Extender Intern needed for
More than 1 year
Opportunity Description:
What is a Clinical Care Extender?
The Clinical Care Extender Program is designed to give the pre-health students unprecedented access to direct patient care experience. As a Clinical Care Extender, you will become a valuable member of the patient care team in the hospital setting. You will participate in basic patient care tasks such as bathing, changing and feeding patients, and you will have the opportunity to see surgeries performed in the operating rooms and see babies born in Labor & Delivery. The Clinical Care Extender Program is designed to be a rigorous, year-long internship, during which you will learn a lot about the field of health care and a lot about yourself.
As a Clinical Care Extender, you will serve a minimum of one, four-hour shift each week until you accumulate 240 hours of volunteer service. Most departments are open to Clinical Care Extenders seven days a week from 7am to 11pm and scheduling is done on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Before you begin volunteering, you must attend a mandatory three-day training session, where you will learn hospital safety, medical topics and how to find your way around the hospital. Once you pass the entrance exam, you will be a Clinical Care Extender!
In order to be successful in the Clinical Care Extender Program, you must be a self-starter and a motivated individual. The golden rule of the Clinical Care Extender Program is this: You will get out of the program what you put into it – If you jump in and work hard; you will be in store for an amazing experience!
Do you have what it takes to be a Clinical Care Extender?
Are you:
Able to commit to over one year of volunteer service (4 hours EVERY week)?
Able to work independently and be assertive?
A serious pre-health student looking for a real-life hospital experience?
At least 18 years or older?
Accepted into, currently enrolled or graduated from an accredited college or university?
The Clinical Care Extender Program recruits a new class of interns every 3 months. All interested interns must sign up to attend a one-hour Orientation/Interview session. Orientations consist of an introduction to the Clinical Care Extender program, and an oral group interview. Applications must be completed prior to attending an orientation session and reservations are required. Please click on the sign-up link below to schedule your Orientation/Interview session and become one step closer to experiencing the realities of the health care system.
Ready to Sign Up?
Acceptance is granted on a rolling basis, so interested students are encouraged to sign up early! Accepted students are trained to begin volunteering each quarter and training dates will vary by hospital facility. The Clinical Care Extender training is a 3-day event and is usually held on weekends. The trainings last approximately 8 hours each day. All three training days are mandatory. If you know you cannot attend any one or portion of the upcoming training dates, please check back with us during the next orientation cycle.
Prior to training, accepted candidates will need to attend one of the scheduled Immunization/CPR Open Houses. As you will be assisting with patient care, you will be required to submit copies of the following immunizations/tests:
• 2 Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR) over the course of your lifetime
• Hepatitis B vaccination (series of 3 shots, must have at least the first shot, in series, to begin volunteering)
• Negative TB skin test within the last 3 months, or a negative chest x-ray within the last year
You will also be required to obtain BLS CPR certification from the following provider:
• American Heart Association- Health Care Provider Certification
Total Number of Volunteers Needed:
