Volunteer Position Description Job title Helpline Goal or Purpose of the Position Provide the caring voice that greets each client calling or coming into the office by providing empathy and encouragement as well as connecting clients with services offered at CBHP. Work location Front Desk at CBHP CA Bay Area - Palo Alto, CA Key responsibilities ?Address all incoming calls and walk-ins on shift as the first point of contact with clients ?Listen to clients and offer emotional support ?Record information on clients on intake sheets and enter into the Access Database ?Provide information on all client services available at CBHP through conversation with clients, packet mail-outs and referral to the appropriate special service requested ?Working knowledge of Breast Cancer terminology and resources ?Matching clients with appropriate services (Buddy, Consultation Planning, Educational Research, Group Sessions, etc..) ?Respond to email requests online Reports to:Manager, Volunteer Resources Length of Service - 4 hours per week with a minimum 6 month commitment Time commitment 2-4 hour shifts weekly ? 4 hours preferred Qualifications ? Like people, enjoy talking to them and be a good listener ?Proficient in Word, Excel and some knowledge of databases ?Ability to research and provide appropriate resources as requested ?Ability to remain calm and be patient when a client is stressed out after diagnosis ?Capability of assessing client needs and connecting with appropriate resources ?Ability to be discreet and avoid giving advice or making personal recommendation ?Familiarity with breast cancer terminology Training and/or preparation required ?Orientation to CBHP ?Three shadowing sessions with different, experienced, helpliners ?Library orientation ?Training with Manager of Volunteer Resources ?Attending one Thursday evening Open House 5:30-7:30 pm ?Ongoing training at quarterly meetings Benefits to the volunteer You will get the instant satisfaction of having helped individual clients and their families. Most clients are very appreciative of the help that you will be able to give them. Monthly meetings are an opportunity to socialize with other helpliners and receive additional training. As part of the larger CBHP Volunteer Community, you will receive a monthly volunteer mailing which includes news, our monthly calendar and upcoming programs. You will receive information on other volunteer opportunities and invitations to CBHP events.
