Opportunity Description:
Good quality healthcare is not available to everyone in Ecuador. People, especially in rural areas, have to go travel great distances in order to receive medical treatment. In Ecuador’s capital city, Quito, there is a big difference between public and private healthcare This project is located in two public hospitals, one in Quito and one in Los Chillos Valley (at 40 minutes from Quito’s new town).
The placement in Quito is at the pediatric hospital that provides specialized health care for children from birth to 14 years of age. This is one of the main public hospitals in Ecuador and many of the children who receive care at this location come from lower socio-economic backgrounds. If you want to truly make a difference and help others, Eco Volunteer UP provides a volunteer placement at this hospital. All forms of care are needed, from providing for basic care such as changing and feeding the children to entertaining them with reading, coloring, and game playing. This placement allows you to be creative. You are welcome to bring materials and create your program for the children.
The placement in Los Chillos Valley is at a hospital that provides general attention for children and adults; the focus is on providing necessary vaccinations for children and gynecological services for women. Volunteers are able to assist the medical staff as they attend to emergency cases.
Depending on your Spanish skills and medical knowledge, it is possible for you to shadow a doctor in a hospital / clinic setting, intensive care unit, emergency room, at their office helping with administrative tasks, etc. The exact duties may change from day to day depending upon the hospital’s needs.

Volunteer in cloud forest needed for

Opportunity Description:
The volunteer programmers in the Cloud Forest is located in villages close to Mindo and Otavalo, with 350 species of birds.
Cloud Forest Reserves offer the worlds richest bird bio-diversity, unexplored wilderness, natural and archaeological remains, and vibrant landscapes with 80% native forest and 20% organic farmland for the milking of the cows. It is a small place with 200 inhabitants; they came from other towns to this area for better conditions of life. The community was dedicated to cultivating sugar cane, raising cattle, to craft and to exploitation of woods. People of the town are very friendly and helpful. They have a little school, a communal meeting and a church; most of the community is catholic.
The Yumbos culture lived in the northwestern from 13th to 16th centuries. One of the archaeological remnants of this culture are the “Yumbos” pool (located in Tulipe town at 9km in one of projects).
Some people worry about exploitation of the woods and the waste contamination in the forest of Ecuador, especially in the Cloud Forest and this problem has many ecological disasters. Other people think that they cannot do anything about it or the problems are so big that they are out of their hands, therefore, we need people to worry in order to save the Cloud Forest and to teach English to the children communities. Volunteers or Scientists are very welcome.

Volunteer in Galapagos needed for

Opportunity Description:
The Galapagos Islands are located on the Equator in the Pacific Ocean, about 960 km from continental Ecuador. The islands have a volcanic origin, and consist of 13 large islands, six smaller islands, and forty-two small, barren islets.
Millions of years ago, continuous under-sea volcanic eruptions produced huge masses of submarine rock, which pushed upward to the surface of the sea. The submarine volcanoes gave origin to these islands, which comprise one of the most amazing places on Earth.
The Galapagos Islands were declared a National Park on 1959, and were designated a World Humankind Patrimony in 1979. The islands are also a Marine Resources Reserve (since 1986), a Whale Sanctuary (since 1990), and a Marine Biological Reserve (since 1996).
The Galapagos Islands have been an “evolution laboratory” since the English scientist Charles Darwin visited them on 1835. Darwin spent five weeks studying the unique flora and fauna of the islands, and this remarkable place became one of the cornerstones for his revolutionary book about evolution, “On the Origin of Species”.
The islands are inhabited by widely diverse fauna such as giant turtles, sea lions, penguins, land and marine iguanas, gulls, blue-footed and red-footed boobies, masked boobies, and finches (of course!). Viewing these beautiful creatures in their natural habitats makes visiting the Galapagos an unforgettable experience.
During the 1960’s, the first tourism operations started in the Galapagos Islands. Since the beginning, the delicate environments have been responsibly and carefully protected, but the popularity of the islands has been the development engine for the ecological tourism industry. Today, tourism accounts for 80% of the income for the islands, and is the major base of the economy. Other sources of income are fishing (6%), cattle (5%), general merchandise (4%), crafts (3%), and general agriculture (2%).

Volunteer in Wild Rescue Center int he Amazon needed for

Opportunity Description:
The rescue and rehabilitation Centre is based in the Ecuadorian rainforest, just where The Andes and the Amazon rainforest join together. This intersection of biomes creates one of the most diverse places in the world for Biology and Ecology study. The Centre works with the Environmental Police (UPMA) and the Ministry of Environment in the fight against animal abuse and trafficking (poaching). The Centre relies upon the hard work and financial support of volunteers from all around the world.
The Centre was established in 2006 on the land of a family from the Amazon. The last four years has been spent working hard to develop technical knowledge of animal rescue and rehabilitation techniques. Volunteers and staff have worked continuously with the coordinators of the Centre to improve the lives of the animals and to over-come the many challenges faced in running an animal rescue Centre in the Ecuadorian rainforest.
This deep understanding of the local people and their culture, combined with the learning and understanding they have gained of the plight of their native animals over the past four years places in a very unique position.
Currently, we are caring for about 64 animals which include about 28 monkeys, such as squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus), woolly monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha), titi monkey (Callicebus discolor), and capuchins (Cebus albifrons and Cebus apella). We have peccaries (Pecari tajacu), coati (Nasua nasua), tayra (Eira barbara), kinkajou (Potos flavus), margay (Leopardus wiedii), tortoises (Geochelone denticulata), snake (Boa constrictor contrictor), turkey/crested guan (Penelope purpurascens) and many species of parrots (Amazona amazonica, Amazona autummalis, Amazona ochrocephala, Amazona farinosa), Pionus menstrus, Pionus chalcopterus) and macaws (Ara ararauna, Ara macao).
During your time here you will primarily be involved in the day-to-day care of the wide variety of animals at the Centre. You will be involved with the cleaning and preparation of diets, repairing and maintenance of the enclosures, as well as the building of new enclosures as the Centre expands and develops. We also run observation and enrichment projects where the volunteers are encouraged to observe and take notes about the behavior of the animals.
The hours of work are Monday to Friday 8am to 12:30pm and 3pm to 5pm. Volunteers take turns with house-hold chores, including cooking, cleaning, and washing; in this way, everyone has the opportunity to help. On Saturdays the volunteers work for a several hours to clean the volunteer house and the kitchen, and to feed the animals (ending around 10:30 am).
In your free time you can take one of the many beautiful walks through the surrounding area and learn about living here, including improving your Spanish. On the weekends the Centre can arrange jungle tours which take volunteers deeper into the rainforest. Or, you can visit the nearby towns of Tena or Baños, where there are so many different things to do.
This volunteer project is aimed at all people who love the environment and animals, and who want to give us a helping hand in the fight against the threats to the animals in the Amazon Rainforest. The rainforest is a place of inestimable importance to world biology and ecology. We offer volunteers the opportunity to experience life in the jungle working closely and directly with native wildlife of Ecuador and working alongside the local community.

The volunteer programs give support through volunteers to the many worthy programs, such as vulnerable orphanages, institutes for children with disabilities, street children, and local indigenous communities. The volunteer programs are located in and around Quito, the capital of Ecuador. Program locations include the cloud forest and its communities close to Quito, the Ecuadorian Amazon, Puerto López, the Galápagos Islands, and other important places around Ecuador.
We offer volunteers real immersion in the various Ecuadorian ecosystems, and real opportunities for learning and sharing the Ecuadorian cultures, costumes and traditions.
