Job Description:
EACO is seeking Internee (s) and volunteers with public health skills or social work experience to assist in a range of activities that we undertake more so in public health and sanitation. Each volunteer is free to sample any of the following programme activities depending on each volunteer's skills and flexibility. The work you undertake will depend on your specific experience but bellow is the area where we mostly need volunteers to participate:
The communities in Rural Mukono, most of our beneficiaries do not have latrines and bathrooms where to ease themselves. Not only households but also schools we work with. This forces them to dig like 1 foot hole to ease themselves yet they have children in those homes. These holes are dug in the gardens where they grow their food which is risky, some dig besides their houses and it scares us about their health and sanitation when it happens to rain. We see that this causes diarrhorea because flies get onto food, and anything being set for eating, more to that these people do not have a habit of washing their hands after easing themselves and just walk straight to have something to eat; which puts their life at risk. Further still, these people get jiggers and ringworms in their feet and the legs. This also affects the animals they keep in their homes which often call for de-worming and these beneficiaries do not have the money to be out of this problem to look for treatment.
In addition to the above In many Families, more so in rural Mukono and Maracha in west Nile, Children and women travel miles each day to collect water for their families. It's dangerous and debilitating. Children are kept out of school so that they can perform this and other associated household tasks others are also kidnapped and sacrificed more so in Mukono and this happens when they move to collect water to very far wells deep in the forests.
These people have high rates of malnourishment, low but increasing levels of school attendance (especially low amongst girls), high rates of disease (especially malaria), and numerous other problems linked to severe poverty and an exceptionally low standard of living. The creation of a borehole well will put a clean, sustainable source of water in close to approximately 3,000 households. The goal of this project is to put in borehole wells in five sub-counties.
Therefore, to solve this situation we thought it better to start a project on constructing latrines and drilling boreholes for these beneficiaries so that they can live a happy and healthy life as its their right.
We believe that through your help, we can transform their lives. This project is under public health where by we focus on both physical and environmental health and sanitation at large.
It's upon this background that I decided to move in to raise support and create awareness about this situation.
Therefore you can volunteer or support in another way.
For volunteers with the appropriate experience we can organize workshops for both the clients and the volunteers so if you have skills you would like to share with the clients, this is welcomed.
Qualifications
EACO particularly welcomes skilled public health workers or skilled social work professionals that can help the organization to improve and develop.
Skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as interpersonal skills.
Computer literacy and database familiarity required.
The ideal candidate writes persuasive, clear, concise proposals and has experience writing proposals.
A disciplined self-starter who pays attention to detail, regularly sets and achieves work goals, has the ability to work independently and calmly.
Ability to work well in a small team environment is essential.

Volunteer - Community Health Program for Mother & Child care. needed in
Rural Mukono, Uganda and Maracha in West Nile of Uganda
Job Description:
1. Details of project Activities/Implementation plan:
a) Formation of Health Post:
We will organize health posts for group meetings and clinic in 25 villages from all the 5 sub counties of Mukono where community organizer, occasionally nutritionist-cum-health Educator and Female public health supervisor will give education on health and nutrition one in a month amongst mother and newly married women to improve their health condition and a regular monthly counseling center will be conducted by our mobile clinic and these posts will arrange immunization camp and other necessary arrangement to make the people aware of health.
b) Home visit/Individual Counseling:
To create an ideal mother and baby with small family norm in every home with adoption of temporary contraceptive method and permanent sterilization in our target village, our community organizer, Traditional Birth Attendant and volunteers will visit to every home to collect information regarding immunization coverage among pregnant mother and children, eligible couple, practices of low cost nutritious supplementary food, identification of high risk pregnant mothers and children.
c) ANC and PNC Services:
Will be ANC and PNC services rendered by Community Organizer (Female) through our mobile health care unit once in a month at Health post to identify high risk pregnant and lactating mothers and children suffering from malnutrition and they will be referred for consultation with medical officer to our Central level Clinic where daily service will be made available. Regular grant monitoring and advice on diet control will also be given to the expected mothers lactating mothers and children. At this point minor iron and vitamin deficiency diseases will also be treated by community organizer at village level.
d) Training of Traditional Birth Attendant and Community Organizer.
On a regular basis we will arrange training program for Traditional Birth Attendant and Community organizers to impart knowledge and information to change their attitude and practices and to equip themselves with knowledge for safe delivery, identification of high risk pregnancies and children, malnourished mothers and child first aid, Home Nursing, treatment of common and minor ailments, different methods of birth control, motivation technique, supplementary nutritious food preparation and preparation of hand made oral re-hydration. Their work will be monitored by Health Supervisor and Nutrition-cum-Health educator from time to time.
e) Training of Volunteers:
We will arrange Training for youth club, local leaders and school teachers to act as volunteers for full participation in our program implementation regarding immunization schedule, different methods of birth control, importance of functional literacy, low cost supplementary food preparation basic knowledge about community health, environmental sanitation, hygiene, supply of safe drinking water, smokeless woven low-cost latrine etc. with community organization, community participation first aid and Home Nursing to change their practice toward achieving better health.
2. Training and Education:
To change rural odd practices pertaining to health we will impart rural people necessary Training to acquire knowledge through our functional literacy center at grass root level and for youth club member, community leader and school teacher training will be given at Center level regarding Health and Family Welfare Sanitation and supply of safe drinking water and preparation of low cost nutrition supplementary food preparation to achieve our ultimate goal of making at least one Social worker in every house and to create general consciousness about health hazards amongst the target community member.

Volunteer - Sexual Reproductive Health Program needed in
Mukono in Uganda and Maracha in West Nile of Uganda
Job Description:
The volunteers are expected to carry out a Sexual Reproductive Health Program, which focuses on counseling and guidance, educational trainings, and community outreach related to HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), family planning, and life skills planning.
To implement this program, EACO administers free voluntary counseling and testing for HIV/AIDS and other STDs and provides HIV+ individuals with ARV's with support from Mukono Health centre therefore these clients need to be taught on how to take these medicines also on how to improve on their diet. They need to be trained on proper nutrition as you know these tablets are very strong and before you take them you need to find something good to eat which is nutritious.
You can also make regular home visits to those who have tested positive in order to supply them with foodstuffs that have been donated to EACO and some other goods.

Job Description:
The Existing Water Situation/Facilities and Related Problems
The main problem or challenges that we face in Mukono District are:
Distances to the well from the households in hilly areas.
Time wasted by the women and children fetching water.
Water-borne and related diseases.
Risks like rape, and child sacrifice.
Risks on the way to the well; e.g. accidents, snake bites, etc.
Causes of these problems:
Poverty in the area: the community cannot afford enough money to built up a better water system to extend water near their houses.
The available water sources are unprotected, and therefore, probably polluted springs (pond).
Diseases due to the available contaminated water.
The distance between the water sources causes time wastage and the households.
Given the present human resource constraints that the sector is facing both at the central and district local government levels, it is recommended that the sector identifies and focuses attention and support to some critical areas that affect the service delivery efficiency.
For example, though Mukono is surrounded by the Lake Victoria, some other parts which are not near the lake – people in that area fetch water from the trench, and water in these trenches is not safe.
The reason being that this water is used by both people and animals, which leads to an outbreak of diseases in this area.
Our Water and Sanitation Project
This project will combat the high levels of concern of the situation of the increased number sicknesses/illnesses, as a result of lack of clean and safe water in the area..
Statistics/evidence show that this area does not have any protected water source to provide clean and safe water to the people in the entire communities. As a result of this, several cases of malaria, typhoid, bilharzias and diarrhorea both in children and adults have been so rampant.
On a daily basis, Kyampisi Health Centre, a health unit in the area, receives a total of 25 to 35 patients suffering from such dirty water-related diseases.
This project basically aims at providing accessible clean and safe water for everyone in the community of Kyampisi Namanganga village for a better and healthy life.
Water supply, sanitation ,and health are closely related. Poor hygiene, inadequate quantities and quality of drinking water, and lack of sanitation facilities cause millions of the world's poorest people to die from preventable diseases each year. Women and children are the main victims.
Water, sanitation and health are linked in many ways:
Contaminated water that is consumed may result in water-borne diseases including viral hepatitis, typhoid, cholera, dysentery and other diseases that cause diarrhea.
Without adequate quantities of water for personal hygiene, skin and eye infections (trachoma) spread easily.
Water-based diseases and water-related vector-borne diseases can result from water supply projects (including dams and irrigation structures) that inadvertently provide habitats for mosquitoes and snails that are intermediate hosts of parasites that cause malaria, schistomsomisis, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis and Japanese encephalitis.
Drinking water supplies that contain high amounts of certain chemicals (like arsenic and nitrates) can cause serious disease.

EACO also campaigns for Poverty, HIV/AIDS and human awareness and provides direct support to children who have been orphaned as a result of the Poverty, HIV/AIDS, Violence, Displacement War, or Conflict.
