Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
Hillside Healthcare Center provides free health care to the people of the Toledo District in southern Belize. The organization runs an on-site clinic and a mobile clinic servicing the area's remote rain forest villages. It also conducts home visits in the Punta Gorda area and organizes various community education projects. Physicians of all specialties are welcome. Volunteers are asked to commit a minimum of two weeks. Hillside welcomes both long and short term health professional volunteers. Past and present volunteers include physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, occupational and physical therapists, physician assistants, and dentists. Volunteers are readily incorporated into all aspects of the daily Hillside program including work with the student/resident participants (see ?Student/Resident Medical Elective Program?). Physician volunteers have the opportunity to deliver care while preceptoring the elective participants and impacting their educational experience. Long term volunteers at Hillside have the opportunity to contribute to program growth and innovation. All volunteers will be exposed to the diverse cultures of the area and be able to enjoy the unique natural surroundings of the region. A two-week minimum stay is encouraged. Long term volunteers often stay one year or longer. Free housing is provided for long term volunteers. For those staying 6 months or more, funds for airfare and a monthly stipend may be available through one of Hillside?s partnering organizations. Short term volunteers (those staying for one month or less) are housed at no cost when space is available but are required to cover most other expenses. Obtaining a temporary license in Belize is mandatory for all volunteers prior to their arrival to Hillside. The Hillside administration will facilitate the licensing process. To do so, it will need to receive each volunteer?s health professional license and CV at least three months prior to their desired start date. Third and fourth year medical students, medical residents from primary care specialties and physician assistant (PA) students are eligible A four week minimum commitment is asked of each participant (special circumstances will be considered). Each elective period will run approximately from the beginning to the end of each calendar month. Participants are accepted from all countries; however, fluency in written and spoken English, the official language of Belize, is necessary. Participants from countries other than the US must be at educational levels equivalent to those noted to be eligible above. All qualified applicants will be accepted on a first come first serve basis. A maximum of five applicants per month will be accepted. All participants must be in good standing with their school or residency program and will be required to demonstrate this through a letter of good standing, written by a faculty member of their school or by their residency program director. This letter is to accompany their application. Participants are required to complete the application process according to the provided guidelines in order to be considered for placement in the elective. A US$250 course fee will be required of all accepted participants.
