Desert Humanitarian Aid Worker - short term needed for
Less than 1 month
Opportunity Description:
No More Deaths needs volunteers in the Arizona border region between June 10 and September 30, 2007 for periods of a week or longer.
Volunteers may do one or a combination of the following options:
*** Search and rescue patrols and full-time presence in the desert providing humanitarian aid.
* Volunteers camp and hike the vast network of migrant trails, looking for migrants in distress and leaving food and water on well-used paths. When we encounter migrants, all of them are dehydrated, most of them need blister care, and many have much more serious medical problems.
Skills necessary:
* Flexibility, independence, and ability to work and live closely with others.
* In good physical health: able to withstand temperatures above 90-100?F on a daily basis; able to carry a pack (20-30 lbs) and hike about 4 miles (if planning to work in the desert); have no health conditions that may require immediate medical attention (we are often over an hour?s drive from a hospital); awareness that immune systems may have trouble with the water, diet, and environment in Mexico.
* In good mental health: able to handle high-stress situations, work well under pressure, and hear countless tragic stories.
* Spanish skills are very helpful (especially for work in Northern Mexico), but not necessary.
* Medical skills are also very helpful. We can never have enough doctors, nurses, EMTs, etc.
* Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Migrant Center Humanitarian Aid Worker - short term needed for
Less than 1 month
Opportunity Description:
No More Deaths needs volunteers in the Arizona border region between June 10 and September 30, 2007 for periods of a week or longer.
Volunteers may do one or a combination of the following options:
*** Search and rescue patrols and full-time presence in the desert providing humanitarian aid
*** Staffing migrant centers in Northern Mexico
* At the NMD-supported aid centers in Nogales and Agua Prieta, Sonora, we see hundreds (around 900) of recently deported or repatriated migrants every day.
o We provide food, water, basic medical care, and information about resources in the area for people who need any or all of those things.
o Medical needs are huge here. Dehydration, hyperthermia, blisters, embedded cactus spines, twisted ankles and legs, cuts, bruises, and a multitude of other medical problems are present in almost every person we see.
* Compiling human rights violations (Spanish skills necessary)
o Vast numbers of migrants we encounter at migrant centers have been denied food and water, separated from their families, deported at night, denied medical care, and/or been physically, emotionally, and sexually assaulted. It is important in the struggle to implement new standards in detention facilities and that we continue to document and compile these experiences.
o Volunteers who are interested in this project (and who can speak Spanish) will be trained in abuse compilation and will interview migrants and document their experiences.
