Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
PREP (Pilipino Recruitment and Enrichment Program) has been part of UCLA for over twenty years and provides service to the greater Long Beach area, including schools such as San Pedro, Leuzinger, and Wilson High Schools. The PREP staff, which consists of all UCLA college students, commutes to Long Beach once a week to mentor the students to the schools listed above. Through this peer mentorship, the staff of PREP builds strong relationships and thus provides a safe, effective atmosphere for students to share and reflect on what they believe is important in their community. The activities switch off from week to week, alternating between Sala Talks and SPAM (Supporting Peers through Advising and Mentoring). Sala Talks provide an open forum for everyone to share their ideas and thoughts without judgment. Topics range from community problems to family issues to cultural assessments. SPAM offers one-on-one peer mentoring/counseling sessions where the students are free to talk about any issues facing them today in full confidentiality. This is an activity in which PREP works together with Pilipinos for Community Health (PCH), which is another organization at UCLA. PREP also collaborates with Kababayan Alliance (Kaba) and Kabataang maka Bayan (KmB), two outside organizations based in Long Beach.
