Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
Filipinos for Community Health (PCH) addresses the preventive, sexual, and psychosocial health needs of the socioeconomically disadvantaged Pilipino-American community of Los Angeles. Realizing the need for health awareness, PCH was established in 1989, and continues to play an influential role in the Filipino community. PCH highly encourages healthier lifestyles and behaviors while enhancing UCLA student involvement and education. PCH addresses four prevalent health concerns: hypertension, diabetes, psychosocial and sexual health. PCH is dedicated to educating the Pilipino community about prevalent health issues such as hypertension, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and teen pregnancy, as well as psychological health issues. This includes holding sites for volunteers at various locations throughout the year. PCH also provides pre-health support for students interested in the health profession. As an example of some of the services, PCH volunteers provide free weekly blood pressure screenings at Seafood City in Carson as well as Seafood Ranch Market in Glasel Park. Service recipient turn out is high at these two sites, ensuring a safe and comforting environment for them and our volunteers. This component also provides free blood pressure screenings at Filipino community events such as Justice for Filipino-American Veterans (JFAV) and the Filipino Town anniversary festival (i.e. FPAC). Volunteers are trained and certified by the American Red Cross to test and inform recipients of the risk of hypertension. In addition, the hypertension component does outreach to other ethnic communities by collaborating with Latino Student Health Project (LSHP), and Asian Pacific Health Coalition (APHC). This year PCH will continue the inclusion of diabetes screenings due to the equally high development and risk in the Filipino community.
