Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
The name Health Opportunities for People Everywhere (HOPE) is reflected in its mission:
It is Project HOPE's mission to achieve sustainable advances in health care around the world by implementing health education programs, conducting health policy research, and providing humanitarian assistance in areas of need; thereby contributing to human dignity, promoting international understanding, and enhancing social and economic development. The essence of Project HOPE is teaching; the basis is partnership.
Identifiable to many by the S.S. HOPE, the world's first peacetime hospital ship, Project HOPE now conducts land-based medical training and health care education programs on five continents, including North America.
Project HOPE has been active in Africa since 1964. Current Africa programs, based in Malawi, Mozambique and Namibia focus primarily on HIV/AIDS education and improving the health of mothers and children, traditionally the most vulnerable populations.
Project HOPE, active in more than 30 countries around the world, works to achieve sustainable improvements in health by focusing its efforts in the following areas: infectious diseases (especially tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS), women's and children's health, professional education, health facilities development and humanitarian assistance. The organization offers assignments lasting from a week to a year in which volunteer doctors educate health care practitioners in matters such as primary care, disease management and preventive health care.
