MISSION TRW is a community based non-profit organization dedicated to improving the literacy and well-being of the disadvantaged children within the suburbs of Kampala. TRW Uganda is “Teach me how to Read and Write” it is a community based child literacy program that operates in Banda zone 3 a suburb in Kampala Uganda. It was formed basing on the objectives below. • To equip the kids in the community that don’t have chance to be in school with the basic reading and writing skills. • To sensitize the kids about HIV, AIDS and other related diseases • To provide psycho-social support to the kids • To equip the kids with basic life skills to enable them deal effectively with their daily challenge and make informed decisions. Why these objectives The area has very many children of school going age that are not in school, and mainly because their parents don’t have the money to take them to school and yet reading and writing are a fundamental aspect in the life of every individual hence the TRW program. The community is characterized with issues like child prostitution, drug abuse, the number of people and children that are hiv positive in the area is very high. This is designed to help those children that are hiv positive acquire the skills on how they can leave positively, and also help those that are negative understand how they can support the positive peers and how they can protect them selves from acquiring the virus. The children are exposed to things like domestic violence, drug abuse, and child neglect, mistreatment and abandonment which have an influence on the well being, and mental status of the children which calls for psycho social support and counseling. Looking at the above characteristics of the area there is a need of helping the kids to deal effectively with he challenges that they are going through as they grow up, putting into consideration the value of their lives and hence the need for the basic life skills.
