Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
UCLA Special Olympics (Special-O) began in 1979 as one of the only student-run Special Olympic Chapters in the country. Special-O provides individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, Downs syndrome, epilepsy, and general learning disorders with the opportunity to participate in a variety of athletic activities. Special-O serves approximately 30 athletes regularly and has a roster of over 45. The majority of the athletes are Latinos and African-Americans who reside in South Central Los Angeles. Our regular practices provide those with intellectual disabilities with the opportunity to compete in tournaments, learn physical fitness and well-being. The UCLA students and alumni volunteers not only coach athletics at practices and provide support at tournaments but also create a nurturing environment for many of our athletes who need positive role models. However, UCLA volunteers learn about the need for the community to support these individuals. Special-O holds practice every Saturday morning. A UCLA student volunteer boards a bus to pick up the athletes or service recipients from Manual Arts and Dorsey High Schools and brings them to the UCLA campus. At UCLA the athletes meet the coaches and receive training in soccer, basketball, softball, tennis, bocce ball, and gymnastics. Once practice is over, they board the bus with a coach and return to their morning bus stops. For the 2005-2006 year, the program's agenda will consist of sixteen practices, six tournaments (two hosted by Special-O and the remainder hosted by other Special Olympics chapters), two family social events, one field trip, and a number of coaches' meetings for recruitment, training, planning, and evaluation. We meet Saturdays Saturday 8:45AM-12:00PM @ the top of Bruinwalk.
