The role of volunteers is not to replace, but to supplement the regular professional staff, freeing them to provide the highest quality of patient care. Approximately 350 volunteers are in the volunteer corps at any one time. This includes adults, college students, high school students during the summer, and San Diego community chaplains. Volunteer assignments may include a combination of clinical and administrative tasks. Clinical Tasks Run errands to labs, pharmacy and other areas. Transport and escort patients (using wheelchair). Assist staff with patients (feeding, turning, ambulating). Read to and visit with patients. Administrative Tasks Filing. Answer phones, take messages. Computer data entry. Organize patient charts. Organize patient information materials. Photocopying. Clean equipment. Organize supplies.
